I chose not to make a creature, and instead picked up a decorative small barrel I had, a little toy truck and a pencil. These were the thumbnails I created for it before deciding on a final composition.
The final image. I struggled to make mine using hatching and cross hatching. I ended up shading it the way I knew how so I knew where the shadows would be and then going over them with hatching. I know that is not what was asked, however this helped me to see where hatching would be and now I think I have a better idea on how to create shadows using those methods.
